Simplification comes to Office 365 activation

We’ve blogged frequently about simplification initiatives in volume licensing such as our new Online Services Terms, and the Microsoft Products and Services Agreement.   Here’s the latest in our ongoing commitment to simplify how customers acquire, manage and use our products.

As of November 17, it is easier to activate Office 365 subscriptions purchased via Open License, Open Value, and Open Value Subscription programs.  In response to customer and partner feedback, we’ve addressed two issues around activation:

  • We removed the copy-paste step.  Previously all Office 365 customers had to copy and paste Online Service Activation keys from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) to the Office 365 portal.

  • We eliminated the need for multiple log-ins.  Customers who have not purchased other products in the same order will not need to use the VLSC nor log in with a Microsoft account.

Together these changes halve the number of steps needed to begin using Office 365.  The screenshot below shows the new keyless activation portal.

Customers purchasing both new and renewal subscriptions of Office 365 will benefit from the new experience, as will any customers who have purchased subscriptions but not yet redeemed them.  A consolidated view of a customer’s licensing position is also still available in VLSC for organizations that have purchased other Microsoft products.

For step-by-step guides on the new activation process, see the Training and Resources page or FAQ.
